Objective – To provide an introduction and background of the Vyākaraṇa and allied Vedāṅgas, pre-Pāṇinian and Pāṇinian tradition of Vyākaraṇa

Expected Outcomes:

·       Ability to understand the architecture of Aṣṭādhyāyī as a treatise of language structure

·       Ability to independently study Aṣṭādhyāyī with allied texts

·       Comprehend the computational model of Sanskrit grammar as propounded in Aṣṭādhyāyī

Prerequisite - None

1.1.          Introduction to Vyākaraṇa: [3 hours]

·       Vedic limbs pertaining to language (Sanskrit) – Śikṣā, Nirukta and Vyākaraa

·       Sanskrit – Vedic and Laukika

1.2.          Pāṇini, his predecessors and successors [3 hours]

·       Tradition of Vyākaraa known preceding Pāṇini

·       Contribution of Pāṇini as the holistic grammarian and language scientist

·       Pāṇini and his successors – the unbroken lineage of Vyākaraa

1.3.          Structure of Aṣṭādhyāyī [9 hours]

·       The Māheśvara sūtras

·       Types of sūtras

·       General introduction to contents of the chapters of Aṣṭādhyāyī

·       Computation model of Aṣṭādhyāyī

·       Data vs meta data

·       Usage of artificial categories for a real purpose

·       Universal grammar

·       Introduction to Mahābhāṣya and Kāśikā

1.4.          Siddhānta-kaumudī model [3 hours]

·       Rationale of application of sūtras in the Siddhānta-kaumudī model over the Aṣṭādhyāyī model [2 hours]

·       Overview of chapterization in Siddhānta-kaumudī [1 hour]

1.5.          Aṣṭādhyāyī – sañjñā and paribhāṣā sūtra text (along with Kāśikā) [12 hours]

MAM202 – Vyākaraṇa 2

Course categorySemester 2

Objective – To study the sañjñā, paribhāṣā and pañca-sandhi prakaraṇas of Siddhānta-kaumudī

Expected Outcomes:

·       Observe the convergences and divergences between the Aṣṭādhyāyī and Siddhānta-kaumudī models and understand the rationale of such modelling

·       Observe the computational modelling of the sutras in a specific phonetic application

·       Identify and make conjunctions in Sanskrit usage based on the study of the sandhi-sūtras studied herein

Prerequisite - Completion of MAM102 – Vyākaraṇa 1 is preferable

1.1.          Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī: Sañjñā-prakaraṇa [4.5 hours]

1.2.          Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī: Paribhāṣā-prakaraṇa [1.5 hours]

Laghu-siddhānta-kaumudī: Pañca-sandhi-prakaraṇa [24 hours – varied durations for each prakaraṇa based on requirement]

MAM201 – Nyāya-vaiśeṣika Basic

Course categorySemester 2

Objective – To provide a brief introduction of the tradition of Nyāya system of thought and study the categories of the Nyāya ontology based on the Nyāya-sūtra of Gotama

Expected Outcomes:

·       Understand the evolving nature of technical Indic knowledge systems that spelled widespread influence on other knowledge systems also

·       Understand the cognition-centric approach in Indic knowledge systems which emphasized on logical validation and proposed mechanisms of expression to it

·       Understand the classification schema in the Nyāya system and work on applying it in other spheres of knowledge/content/system

Prerequisite – None

1.1.           Introduction to the tradition of Nyāya and its later merger with the Vaiśeika school of thought: [6 hours]

·       Nyāya as an Āstika-darśana [1 hour]

·       The old school of Nyāya [3 hours]

·       The Navya-nyāya pramāṇa-śāstra and ontological merger with the Vaiśeṣika school [2 hours]

1.2.           Categories of the Nyāya ontology: Based on Nyāya-sūtra of Gotama: [24 hours]

Nyāya-sūtras from chapter 1 up to and including chapter 4 [Each chapter 6 hours]
